Indtroduction of an Identity Management System for directory synchronization

Novell identity Manager ensures a high data quality within the ID repositories of the different IT systems at our customer VDMA

As one of the key association service providers in Germany, the VDMA [German Engineering Federation] offers its members the largest branch network of the capital goods industry in Europe. An important task of IT management in the VDMA is the administration of internal and external user authorizations for various IT systems and applications.

In the past, the increasing number of IT systems and applications had meant that manually setting up, changing and deleting user authorizations had become ever more costly and time-consuming. At the same time, the data quality in individual ID repositories of the IT systems and applications was deteriorating (e.g. HR application, directory services, groupware system, telephone system, calculation of printing costs, etc.). For these reasons, the IT management of the VDMA decided in the middle of 2008 to introduce a professional Identity Management System.

The specialists of Peak Solution were brought in to manage the project and implement the procedure. The crucial factors behind this decision were the excellent process and technology know-how of Peak Solution in the field of identity & access management, as well as their vendor-independent consulting approach.

After the prioritization of various requests and requirements on the part of the stakeholders, the consultants from Peak Solution recommended the Novell Identity Manager as the solution platform. Important criteria here were the smooth integration into the existing Novell network and the outstanding possibilities for connecting to different target systems via standardized connectors. With its “Designer“, the Novell platform also offers a unique graphic user interface via which all connectors and workflows for synchronization and the provision of identity data can be professionally configured and administered. In addition, Novell is one of the few manufacturers on the market who, apart from the subjects of identity synchronization and provisioning, also cover the fields of enterprise Single-Sign-On, Web Access Management and Security Incident Event Management with an integrated product portfolio that above all is ready for the market. Even now, corresponding solutions for later phases of the project are already provided.

The complete project at the VDMA was performed on the basis of a process which was designed by Peak Solution specifically for the planning and implementation of identity management projects. Extensive best practices and templates, developed by the consultants of Peak Solution in recent years during various projects, form part of the project model. Because of this, Peak Solution can ensure an efficient and high-quality implementation of identity management projects.

The following objectives defined for phase 1 were achieved in less than 40 days of consulting:

  • Connecting 5 target systems
  • Allocating all user accounts to their owners (Identity Mapping)
  • Cleaning up user data in the target systems
  • Automatic synchronization of identity data between different ID repositories
  • Making available measures for provisioning workflows and password management
  • Implementation (going live) of the system
  • Documentation of the solution
  • Training administrators

Thus, Peak Solution was again able to demonstrate at the VDMA that it can excel not only as a process consultant and implementation partner for identity management, but also in project management. All schedules and cost estimates that were made during the planning of the project were met without problem, not least due to the trusting partnership relationship with Novell, as well as the intensive, committed cooperation of all the departments at the VDMA that were involved.

Other project phases are planned, such as the mapping of application and approval processes for specific user authorizations, and the implementation of enterprise Single-Sign-On.
